How to Handle Emotional Outbursts With Empathy

Emotional outbursts can be overwhelming—for both the child and the parent. But they’re also moments filled with opportunity for connection and co-regulation.

Stay calm: Start by regulating yourself first. Breathe deeply before responding.

Acknowledge the feeling: Use validating language: “I see you’re really upset.”

Lower your tone & body: Come to their eye level, soften your voice, and remove the pressure to "fix."

Wait, don’t rush: Let the emotion pass before diving into problem-solving.

Reconnect after the storm: Once calm, revisit the moment gently. Ask, “What did you need from me then?”

Empathy builds emotional safety—and it lays the foundation for long-term emotional intelligence.
